If you wish to produce compressed biofuel from wood sawdust, sunflower husks, flax processing waste, grain crops, etc., options such as briquettes and pellets are available to choose from. However, the best solution will be to focus on creating one type of product. So, which is more profitable, making pellets or fuel briquettes?

Aspects of pellet production in industry

According to the types of waste generated in production, the pellets created are classified into the following categories:

• High quality (DIN+ standard);
• Industrial

The first option is accompanied by the production of white pellets, which include a small amount of ash. This can be achieved using the raw material of woodworking waste without bark. One of the most common sales methods is the sale in bags of up to 25 kg. When the method used in the enterprise does not include cleaning of the bark or the owner faces the goal of processing convex boards with bark and low-quality chips, the businessman needs to think about the production of industrial pellets and briquettes. Industrial pellets have found their application in the form of solid fuel, if the composition contains small amounts of ash, and are also needed for domestic purposes, such as hygienic filler for cat litter.

Fuel briquettes – production features and advantages

Briquettes made using the PB-48 briquetting press have become widespread. Their production is much cheaper than pellets. The product can be used in any ovens, boilers and fireplaces that are not equipped with special burners. The PB-48 briquetting press allows you to create fuel briquettes that have the following advantages:

1. Ease of use;
2. Do not spark and do not shoot when burning;
3. Saving storage space;
4. Moisture resistance;
5. High heat output.

Ready-made briquettes are popular both in the domestic market and outside of Ukraine. The main advantage of this type of biofuel is the possibility of using wood waste of almost any quality for its production. The advantage of using pressed material is that its density is twice that of wood. Such biofuel will require half the storage space. The temperature during pressing stimulates the melting of fuel briquettes, which ensures their strength and facilitates their convenient transportation. In addition, the PB-48 briquetting press creates biofuel without binding substances. Gluing is ensured due to natural legin contained in the composition of raw materials.

What are heating briquettes made of?

Despite the fact that gas and electric heating devices and heating briquettes have firmly established themselves in human life, solid biofuel also remains in demand. It continues to be used for heating private and country houses, as well as for lighting baths and fireplaces. Often, solid fuel stoves are irreplaceable in high-rise buildings where natural gas has not yet been installed.

Wooden heating briquettes

Fuel blocks (Euro fuel) have long been used worldwide. After all, it has been proven that the use of wooden beams is irrational, and the consumption of natural elements is uneconomical. Pressed briquettes help solve the difficulty. The production of wood fuel Eurowood uses waste from the woodworking industry, heats it to a certain temperature and presses it under high pressure. For the process, a briquetting press PB-75 or other models is used. Some believe that a special glue is used in production, but this is not the case. During pressing, hot shavings release a natural adhesive substance called lignin. This makes the blocks strong and allows them to keep their shape during transportation and storage. This type of biofuel is absolutely harmless to human health when used. The PB-75 briquetting press allows you to create sawdust briquettes, which have the following advantages:

1. The possibility of use for barbecues when preparing food.
2. The smallest amount of smoke than when burning wood.
3. Compact form for easy storage and transportation.
4. Ability to easily plan the amount of fuel needed for the season.
5. Combustion releases an order of magnitude less poisonous CO2 when compared to other types of fuel.

In addition, the higher density of Eurowood ensures their long-term burning. Therefore, you can put 4 times less briquettes in the furnace or boiler.

In addition to woodworking waste, fuel blocks can also be created from agricultural waste: straw, leaves, peat, etc. The capabilities of the PB-75 briquetting press also allow the production of fuel briquettes from the following raw materials:

• Buckwheat husk (husk) acts as a natural accumulator of natural energy. This is provided by the petals of the shell of buckwheat grains, which protect them and absorb the sun’s heat. At the same time, the energy potential of the shell increases from the semi-crystalline structure of the protein.
• Linen. Flax briquettes have not yet gained wide demand in the solid biofuel market, but in the case of using high-quality raw materials and a serious approach to their processing, the resulting product will be on a par with common sawdust and straw blocks.
• Husk of sunflower seeds. It is popular because during the production of seed oil, a considerable amount of waste is collected, which has the highest heat output.

The ash remaining from briquettes made of husks or husks makes it possible to fertilize the garden beds well. Eurowood is an ecologically harmless fuel that allows you to solve the issue of eliminating waste from the production of sunflower oil. Briquetting press PB-75 due to high temperature and pressure prevents the blocks from falling apart at the exit. At the same time, the presence of lignin in the raw material makes it possible to dispense with the addition of binding substances, thereby saving money.

Results of the 8th International Exhibition “Grain Technologies-2018”

From February 21 to 23, 2018, the PMZ Denasmash LLC plant participated in the 8th International Exhibition “Grain Technologies -2018”. The event was held in Kyiv at the International Exhibition Center. Our stand presented samples of the products that we manufacture at the PMZ Denasmash LLC plant. We are talking about the youngest solid fuel boiler in the line, with a capacity of 98 kW, and the PB-48 press-briquetting unit. This is only a small part of what is produced at our factory, but it was of great interest to the visitors of the exhibition.All three days were very busy. The endless flow of visitors showed how relevant and interesting this exhibition was.

We can say with confidence that the exhibition was more than successful for the PMZ Denasmash LLC plant. We want to say that this is evidenced by a number of factors. It is not only about the fact that the sale was carried out “on the spot”. But also the excitement that was around our products. This exhibition gave a clear understanding that we are moving in the right direction. Our products are relevant, high-quality, reliable and competitive. Despite all the positive emotions from this exhibition, we understand that there is always room to strive further. To try to be even better, to achieve even more. From November 4 to 7, “PMZ Denasmash” LLC took part in the VII International Specialized Exhibition “Energy Efficiency. Renewable energy-2014”.

At the exhibition, participants from foreign and domestic companies presented innovative solutions and modern developments in the field of energy-efficient technologies.

More than 100 companies participated in conferences and business meetings related to the most pressing and relevant issues of the development of renewable energy.

The exhibition “Energy efficiency. Renewable energy – 2014” was very fruitful for us. During all exhibition days, life was raging and raging near the stand of PMZ Denasmash LLC. This is not surprising, because we have just provided a comprehensive solution to the issue of energy independence. We presented equipment for the production of fuel from biomass, cauldrons capable of working on almost any solid fuel, new generation solid fuel burners.

Choosing heating. What are the options?

If you need to organize heating for new premises, or you have decided to find an alternative to the old heating system, we recommend that you approach this issue thoroughly and read our article “Choosing heating. What are the options?”. Today, there are quite a few types of fuel, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages in use. When it comes to designing a heating system, when choosing equipment and type of fuel, be guided primarily by key factors:

• availability of the raw material base – agree, it is not profitable to buy cheaper fuel that is far from your home or production, otherwise all the savings will go to its transportation;
• fuel prices – at the moment, this factor is the most decisive for our user;
• convenience in using a certain type of fuel – decide for yourself whether you are ready for physical labor and additional maintenance of the heating system, or whether you will agree to comfortable heating?

We decided to post basic information about the most common types of fuel, the features of their use in heating. So:

The most common type of heating is gas heating.

Advantages of using mains gas:

• The level of gasification of urban and rural areas is quite high, almost everywhere there is an opportunity to access gas communications. This explains the popularity of gas as the main type of fuel.
• Burning gas achieves a relatively high efficiency of up to 85%, with almost uninterrupted gas supply.
• Gas boilers operate in automatic mode. You need to perform maintenance every year, namely inspection and adjustment.

Disadvantages of gas:

• Price. The cost of gas for both the population and enterprises is constantly increasing. After all, it is very difficult to plan your expenses for the heating season.
• Although gas boilers are relatively cheap, the connection to the central GPS and all the permits will cost you quite a lot.
• Certified organizations connect and maintain.
• Despite the extensive gasification of populated areas of Ukraine, you may face the fact that you will have to pull gas pipes to the village where your country house is located. It is difficult to do it alone, mainly from the financial side. In advance, we advise you to enlist the support of fellow villagers and deal with the issue of gasification with joint efforts.
• Low gas quality, as well as unstable pressure in the system leads to failures in the operation of the heating equipment.

The use of electricity as a heating source also has its pros and cons.

Advantages:

• Environmental friendliness – when using electrical heating equipment, there are no CO2 emissions or waste.
• Availability of this type of fuel. Ukraine produces sufficient amounts of electricity for consumption.
• You don’t even have to spend time looking for a power source – electricity goes to your house by itself.
• Small dimensions of electrical equipment, saving space.
• Ease of maintenance of the cauldron. Especially since you can adjust the temperature at the outlet.
• Regarding cheap equipment.
• Electric boilers have the highest efficiency – 99%.

Disadvantages:

• Electricity is the most expensive type of fuel for heating systems. And the use of electricity as a source of heat on an industrial scale is guaranteed to ruin the enterprise.
• Connecting heating electrical equipment requires numerous permits and documentation.
• Due to frequent scheduled and unscheduled power outages, heating will be interrupted. Electric boilers are completely energy-dependent, so you should take care of an alternative source of energy – the use of a generator or a solid fuel boiler.
• The limited carrying capacity of distribution networks is another difficulty faced when planning electric heating. Boilers up to 6 kW (room heating up to 60 m2) can work on one phase. For boilers over 6 kW, 3-phase equipment is required.

Choosing heating. Liquid fuel (fuel oil, diesel fuel)

Advantages:

• A liquid fuel boiler does not require a special permit for installation.
• Almost all heating equipment that runs on liquid fuel is equipped with automation – this guarantees ease of operation.
• Liquid fuel boilers are easily converted to other fuels. Yes, by simply installing a gas burner, you will ensure the operation of gas equipment.
• The combustion of liquid fuel has a high efficiency. If there are high-quality burners and liquid fuel, the efficiency can reach 95%.
• All combustion products meet environmental standards. As a result, environmental pollution is minimal.

 Disadvantages:

• The main disadvantage of this type of heating is high fuel costs. In addition, the prices of oil products are constantly jumping. And in view of the irreparability of oil reserves, the tendency to lower prices in the future is not foreseen.
• Liquid fuel boilers should be placed in a specially equipped room and a considerable area. The boiler room must be warm – otherwise the liquid fuel thickens and clogs the filters.
• When burning, liquid fuel emits soot, so we advise you to take care of a good hood in the boiler room. Another specific feature of the operation of a liquid fuel boiler is considerable noise. Immediately consider the need for sound insulation.
• The purchase, transportation and storage of liquid-fuel require the presence of special devices, containers, and premises.
• Get ready for the fact that diesel fuel or fuel oil will bring you an unpleasant smell and dirt. In addition, leakage and spillage of fuel increase the risk of ignition.
• The use of a liquid-fuel boiler depends on electricity. In case of power outages, the boiler will have to be started manually.

Coal of different brands

Advantages of coal heating:

• High calorific value of coal and the ability to retain heat for a long time.
• Relatively low cost of heating.
• Coal is an available fuel in any fraction and any grade.
• Ease of fuel storage: coal can be stored outdoors under a canopy.
• Household waste can be burned in boilers together with coal.

Disadvantages of coal heating:

• To keep the heat constant, coal must be thrown into the furnace regularly (2-3 times a day).
• Coal has a high ash content (up to 35%), so you will have to regularly remove ash from the boiler (once every two days), as well as clean the chimney.
• The ash that remains after burning coal is highly carcinogenic, harmful and needs to be disposed of. To remove it, you will need a truck and the right to dispose of the ash at a landfill.
• When coal is burned, it emits by-products that are very dangerous and difficult to determine without specific gasification sensors.
• Unpleasant smell of burning coal in the area.
• Burning coal is not particularly environmentally friendly. The increased level of CO2 is your contribution to greenhouse gases when you choose this heat source.
• Ukrainian coal is not always of high quality, the non-burning fraction in some types of coal can reach 30%. As a result, we get a low calorific value, additional work to clean the equipment and more waste for disposal.
• Coal is a very “dirty” fuel. Coal dust, constantly flying in the air, pollutes the premises and enters the human respiratory tract. People with chronic diseases of the respiratory tract are extremely contraindicated to use a coal furnace.

Choosing heating. Peculiarities of application in pellet heating

This type of fuel entered the market of Ukraine relatively recently and has already proven itself in the best way.

Advantages:

• Solid fuel boilers, as a rule, allow you to completely automate the process of feeding pellets to the furnace and cleaning the burner from the combustion waste that has formed.
• Effective control – the ability to adjust the temperature (with automation).
• Environmental friendliness – when burning pellets, the same amount of CO2 is released as from a street bonfire.
• Compared, for example, with coal, pellets have a low ash content (up to 0.5%). In addition, it is environmentally friendly, has a lot of useful micro- and macro elements and can be used as an excellent fertilizer.
• When burning pellets, the efficiency can reach 95-98%, depending on the type of raw material from which they are made.
• Switching the boiler to long-term burning will allow you to load fuel only twice a day, which entails convenience in maintenance and additional fuel savings.
• Depending on the power of the heating equipment, pellets can be used to heat huge rooms – up to 3000 m2.
• Fuel pellets take up little space for storage, do not carry a lot of dirt and are slightly prone to spontaneous combustion.
• There will always be a raw material base for fuel pellets. These are both wood waste and agricultural waste

Disadvantages:

• The need to maintain a warehouse for storing fuel stock.
• The large dimensions of the heating equipment will require a separate room for the boiler room.
• Sometimes you will have to clean pipes, grates and furnaces from combustion products.
